About the Yoga Retreat
Indulge your senses in the vibrant colours and mystical atmosphere of Mt. Kilimanjaro, known as the Mountain of Light. As the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro is overseer of the continent, the summit of Africa and is sure to inspire you to take your yoga practice to the next level. On the slopes lies Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge where you will have a chance to experience tranquillity and serenity through yoga and meditation twice a day, in the morning and evening. In between yoga sessions we will be exploring the local wildlife, culture, and nature with 4 day-trip excursions. Surrounded by heavy forests, Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge is a local and family run property nestled in a coffee plantation with its own fruit and vegetable gardens which supply the kitchen for daily meals with both vegetarian menu and meat/fish dishes. After dinner relax and share stories around an evening bon-fire.
Yoga Style: Vinyasa Flow & Dynamic Hatha
Taught by Heather Cruise, a Yoga Alliance Certified instructor, she teaches a dynamic form of yoga benefiting those seeking strength, flexibility, a clear mind, and an energy boost. Vinyasa Flow Yoga is a dynamic flow of yoga which uses a system of breath synchronized with movement (Vinyasa) and a range of postures linked together in a continuous flow to build an intense and challenging yoga series. By engage the energy locks (bandhas) and the eye gazing points (dristis) the mind can relax so one can focus the mind in a meditative way during the practice.
Morning Yoga 8:00 – 9:30 am
Sunset Yoga 5:00 – 6:00 pm
Kilimanjaro Yoga Retreat Dates:
The Yoga Retreats are available on the last week of each month throughout the year. Yoga groups are small which allows for personal attention and adjustments.
The yoga retreat is suitable for all levels from beginners to intermediate and advanced.
Day 1: ARRIVE INTO TANZANIA
Depending on your airlines and arrival time, we will meet you at Kilimanjaro International airport and transfer to Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge. This is a stunning family run property at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering breath taking view of the Kilimanjaro from each room with a tranquil environment
Day 2: INTRODUCTIONS & RELAXATION
Begin the day with a 1-hour Yoga session in the morning from around 8.00 to 9.30 am, then head for breakfast prepared from local fresh produce and dairy. During the day relax by the pool, get a massage, hike along the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, or explore the local culture and town of Moshi and surrounding areas. Lunch will be at Kilemakyaro and at 5-6 pm sunset Yoga session. Evening dinner with group bonfire.
DAY 3: Village visit and hike to Materuni Waterfalls and Coffee & Bananana Plantation Tour
Begin the day with a 1-hour Yoga session in the morning from around 8.00 to 9.30 am, then head for breakfast prepared from local fresh produce and dairy. Your guides will collect you around 11:00 from Kilemakyaro Mountain lodge and head out for a walking tour of the surrounding Coffee and Banana Plantations where you will learn about the local Chagga tribe and culture and visit a local village while passing on your way to Materuni waterfalls. The waterfalls are at 150 meters, with a temp of 10C, we will have a picnic lunch while you can enjoy swimming or meditation around the pools. In late afternoon return to the lodge for 5-6 pm sunset Yoga session. Evening dinner with bonfire.
DAY 4: ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK & MOMELLA LAKE
Wake up and refresh with a morning Yoga session and breakfast. After breakfast your guide will export you to Arusha National Park here you will enjoy a morning walking safari escorted by a National Armed Ranger and hike along beside animals like giraffes, buffaloes and many other antelopes. Lunch at the shore of Momela Lake, which is in the middle of the National Park, overlooking hippos and flamingos. After lunch you will enjoy a full game drive in the park, afterwards you drive back to lodge for evening yoga, dinner, and bonfire.
DAY 5: CHAGGA CULTURAL VILLAGE TOUR
Our day starts with an early Yoga session and fresh breakfast. After breakfast your guide will meet you to take you for a cultural tour where you will learn more about the indigenous Chagga people. You will have a chance to taste mbege, also known as banana beer, a traditional brew of the Chagga People. This alcoholic drink is made from ripe fermented bananas. You will be shown how the brewing process works and for the brave hearted given a cup to taste. You will also visit a traditional Chagga house, a very efficient cone-shaped structure with one door and no windows, the roof thatched with dried grass or banana leaves. Also, learn about the historical tribal wars between the Chagga and Maasai by visiting 200 year old tunnels and caves dug by the Chagga people as hide outs for people and their livestock who would live underground for months. In late afternoon return to Lodge for evening yoga, dinner, and bonfire.
DAY 6: HIKE TO LAKE CHALA CULDERA
After a morning yoga session and breakfast head to Lake Chala, a crater lake inside a culdera. Spend the day inside a dramatic volcanic backdrop, a perfect place to unwind and absorb the serenity and tranquillity of this romantic piece of Africa. Picnic at the Lake and in the evening sunset yoga by the lake, return to Lodge for dinner, and bonfire.
DAY 7: RELAX
Wake up slowly and enjoy your final yoga session and breakfast at the lodge before you embark to your next destination. Namaste.
